Great Minds Think Alike: Privacy Policy

Hey, privacy is important, even with science games like this. Here is how Great Minds (Think Alike) uses and protects any information that you give when you use this game.

Great Minds may change this policy from time to time by updating this page. You should check this page to ensure that you are happy with any changes. This policy is effective 1 Jan 2011 and was last updated on 27 May 2011.

Great Minds is committed to ensuring that your privacy is protected. Should we ask you to provide certain information by which you can be identified when playing this game, then you can be assured that it will only be used in accordance with this privacy statement.

What we collect

We may collect the following information:

  • Your Facebook email (used as ID)
  • Words you enter/select, and associations between them
  • Your current location
  • Timestamp of a word association
  • URLs of media content you explore
  • Reference to your Facebook profile

How you can control the information you share

Great Minds provides a Settings panel where the player can control which data will be sent to the game server, the GiveALink server, or shared with other players. In particular, the player can set up these options:

  • Location-aware
Enables the geo-localization of the player's device. The coordinates are sent to the server when a new word association is made.
  • Tag your location
If the Location-aware option is on, the game allows the player to tag their current location in the form of a Google map URL. This annotation is sent to the GiveALink server when the player explores media content.
  • Share my level
This option controls the post on the player's Facebook wall when a new game level is reached.

What we do with the information we gather

When you add a new word or select one of the suggestions to build your chain, the game stores the word association, that is, the source and target words, the timestamp, and your current location (if available). This information is used to characterize your profile (the way in which you relate words) or is aggregated with information from other players to build a map that shows how words are connected. Geo-coordinates are used to study the interplay between physical locations and tagging behavior, to generate localized suggestions, or to analyze the geographical distribution of terms.

When you explore media content, annotations are sent to the database through the GiveALink Web Service. An annotations consists of three elements: the URL of the visited content, the tags (words in the query), and the player identity ( ID). The player location can also be tagged. The player identity (email) is not visible by other players or GiveALink users. The annotations generated through the game are stored to suggest related words to players, study the tagging behavior of the players, and support other social tagging applications.

When you log in, the game asks you to provide the ability to access your Facebook profile. Great Minds does not manage or store your credentials since the login procedure is performed directly by the Facebook servers through the OAuth protocol. If you allow the game to access your Facebook profile, we store only your name, your location, if available, and your profile picture. Facebook data is used to provide you with an option to discover other players who have used similar words and/or who are nearby, with whom you may wish to socialize through the social network. With your permission, the game may also post an update on your wall when your score reaches a new level.
